|ST. LOUIS, MO (April 23, 2012) - Interim Physicians, a physician staffing firm that provides temporary physician coverage to hospitals and healthcare facilities, is pleased to announce that Frank Phillips, Vice President of Quality Assurance at Interim Physicians, has been elected President of the National Association of Locum Tenens Organizations (NALTO).
Locum tenens physicians are those who work temporary assignments either on a part-time or full-time basis. NALTO members elected Phillips to serve as president for a two-year term beginning April 28, 2013.
Phillips is a veteran of the locum tenens industry, and was one of the original founding members of the organization in 2001. On the occasion of his election, he looked back upon the industry changes over the past 11 years before looking ahead to the future.
"Since the dozen original founders met to form NALTO at O'Hare Airport in 2001, I have been an active advocate of the association. Our industry was much younger then, and we had a different set of issues facing us -- mainly the rising costs of medical malpractice insurance. With all of the changes to healthcare delivery today, we must work together as an industry to adapt and grow,” he said.
NALTO’s purpose is to provide a foundation of industry standards and ethical guidelines for companies offering locum tenens physician staffing services. These guidelines provide the building blocks for relationships between NALTO members and their clients.
The advent of healthcare reform and a continuing evolution in how physicians choose to work may lead to major changes in how locum tenens staffing firms operate, underscoring the need for strong leadership in a time of change.
“The demand for physicians on a temporary basis is very strong and growing stronger. However, to stay relevant we may have to change the way we approach our business,” he said. “I believe demand for locum tenens physicians will continue to increase, and it will be NALTO’s responsibility to help members understand how the changes may impact the industry.”
With over 23 years of experience in the locum tenens industry, Phillips is respected as an industry leader. His lengthy bio includes the founding of one of the largest locum tenens firms as well as serving as the president of another large locums firm. Since 2009, Phillips has served as the Vice President of Quality Assurance at Interim Physicians, where he spearheads the "Advanced PeopleCare" quality assurance initiative. This innovative campaign aims to set the highest standards for quality patient care in the locums industry.
Tim Hand, Chief Executive Officer of Interim Physicians, applauded the election. "As a pioneer in the locum tenens industry, it is appropriate for Frank Phillips to take the reins of NALTO as its president. The association is entering a new and vastly different chapter in its history. With the Affordable Care Act and Accountable Care Organizations proliferating, the association must continue to enhance its tradition of excellence in leadership. Frank's talents will be put to good use while representing NALTO members as the best source for properly vetted physician providers."
Phillips has ambitious goals for his two-year term as president. Given his long ties to the association and his vast experience in the industry, Phillips is confident he will successfully guide the organization through this critical time of transition.
“My number one goal is to expand the reach of NALTO by making it the voice of our industry. I believe in NALTO as strongly now as I did the day it was formed, and I want all the member companies to realize the maximum benefits of being a NALTO member,” he said.
A pioneer physician staffing agency, Interim Physicians has provided temporary physician coverage to hospitals, clinics and other healthcare facilities since 1979. The company is headquartered in St. Louis, with offices in Atlanta; Dallas; Portland, Oregon; and Huntsville, Alabama. In 2010 and 2011, Interim Physicians achieved Inc. 5000 status as one of the fastest-growing private companies in the country.
