Perspectives on the locum tenens industry

When you’re staffing for the fast-paced world of locum tenens, you have to be quick on the draw

You know what they say, Everything’s bigger in Texas, which holds true for the locum tenens industry, especially in Dallas. A burgeoning healthcare hub, the Lone Star state’s third largest city boasts a growing labor market and a progressive healthcare environment with major growth in the healthcare staffing and services sector.

There are plenty of reasons to be in Dallas. The incredible market of healthcare providers is just one, says Dom Antonino, Regional VP of Interim Physicians. The Dallas economy has always been a big draw for locum tenens staffing, which is why we’ve made it a point to have a regional office here.”

Interim Physicians has been a major force in healthcare staffing since 1979. Celebrating its forty years in business this year, Interim Physicians is headquartered in St. Louis. The organization also has a regional office in Atlanta.

The locum tenens space continues to grow here and we’re growing along with it. We’re still adding recruiters to account for it all. It’s exciting,” adds Antonino.

One of those new recruiters, Slader Ammons, recently joined the Dallas team to help doctors find contract work. You can really feel the energy here, says Ammons, who hails from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. It’s a good feeling to be a part of a growing company and industry. Not only do I get to help physicians find work here in Dallas, but all over the country as well.”

Another recruiter on the Dallas team, Graham Mask, says the pace is fast, but it’s very gratifying work. The country’s physician shortage coupled with almost endless healthcare opportunities, means it all moves at an incredibly fast pace.”

Speaking of the growing physician shortage, the Association of American Medical Colleges predicts a shortage of up to 121,300 physicians in the U.S. by 2032. Physician turnover is also high. The most recent National Healthcare Retention & RN Staffing report says the average hospital turnover rate in 2017 was 18.2% – the highest recorded turnover in the industry for almost a decade. Throw the aging baby boomer population (who will need more care) into the mix and it’s obvious why healthcare staffing in in such high demand.

More and more physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants are choosing to work as locum tenens, too. John Hoehne, Area VP for Interim Physicians in Dallas (who’s been with the organization for seven years) says, Many healthcare providers feel emboldened to make a change and seek more flexible arrangements in such a strong economy. While it’s great that we get to help physicians find the work they want, we at the same time work to help hospitals and other healthcare facilities that need providers. There’s a balance to it.”

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects healthcare to add over 4 million jobs by 2026, more than any other industry. Many healthcare occupations will grow by double-digit percentages, including physician assistants and nurse practitioners.

“Growth is in the air. We’ve also seen a rise in demand for NPs and PAs, and even CRNAs, says Heather Ward, Recruiting Director at the Dallas office. There’s simply more demand for these roles and many hospitals and clinics just don’t have the bandwidth or infrastructure to seek out the talent. That’s why we’re here.”

Lauren Roberts, a Senior Physician Recruiter in the same office, shares Ward’s sentiments. We’re here to aid in filling the growing amount of positions needed in healthcare. As a one-stop-shop of staffing services, we get to build strong, long-lasting relationships with physicians and advanced practitioners, as well as the facilities that employ them. It’s very rewarding.”

Strong growth in the locum tenens industry is driving Interim Physicians and the Dallas team. What’s more, a recent poll of physicians found that 79% of them find temporary locum tenens work as satisfying or more satisfying than working in a permanent practice.
