Celebrating the Contributions of Locum Tenens Nurse Practitioners During NP Week 2025

Interim Physicians proudly recognizes locum tenens nurse practitioners during National NP Week 2025, November 9 to 15, for their dedication to delivering comprehensive, patient-centered care.

Formally recognized by Congress in 2004, NP Week highlights the vital role these providers play in advancing high-quality care across the country.

Through locum tenens practice, nurse practitioners bring adaptability, clinical expertise, and continuity to health systems that can’t afford delays, whether in major metropolitan hospitals or rural community clinics. Across specialties, from family medicine to pediatrics and women’s health, locum NPs help stabilize care no matter the location or setting.

When Care Can’t Wait, Locum NPs Step Up

As more states grant them full practice authority, locum tenens NPs are poised to play a critical role in addressing the physician shortage. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, the US could see a shortfall of up to 86,000 physicians by 2036, driven by an aging patient population. At the same time, nearly one in five practicing physicians is at or nearing retirement age, compounding the shortage.

Nurse practitioners have stepped in to help close these coverage gaps. As of 2025, 27 states, the District of Columbia, and two US territories grant NPs full practice authority, a shift that expands access and recognizes growing trust. These laws enable NPs, locum or permanent, to evaluate patients, order and interpret tests, and initiate treatment plans without physician oversight.

Locum NPs bring a distinct approach to patient care because they are trained in the nursing model. They focus not just on diagnosis and treatment but also on patient education, preventive care, and chronic disease management. For these clinicians, this method helps them connect with new patients from day one.

One area where locum NPs are already taking on a leadership role is in rural healthcare, where they are often the only primary care providers available. Their ability to step into temporary roles and build trust with patients immediately makes them indispensable partners in maintaining continuity, especially in underserved areas.

As Demand Grows, NPs Are Ready

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment for nurse practitioners will grow by 40% in the next decade, far outpacing the national average for all medical occupations. This reflects both increased demand and greater trust in NPs’ ability to lead care teams and improve outcomes.

Already, NPs practicing in rural areas are more likely to work independently. One study found they were up to 35% more likely than NPs in urban settings to practice without direct physician supervision, further highlighting their adaptability and readiness to meet patients where they are.

Locum tenens NPs are uniquely equipped to adapt quickly to shifting patient needs. Their background in nursing and holistic approach enable them to integrate seamlessly into new environments, easing transitions and supporting clinical teams wherever they’re needed most.
